As Nigeria marks the International Day of Families, the Federal Government has announced three key initiatives to support families and tackle poverty.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, revealed this in a statement signed by her media adviser, Jonathan Eze, on Friday.
She said the programmes will launch under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to address major family-related challenges. The initiatives aim to strengthen family bonds, protect vulnerable children, and reduce poverty, especially in urban areas facing insecurity and high living costs.
The 2025 International Day of Families, themed “Family-oriented policies for sustainable development,” highlights the role of strong family policies in national development. Sulaiman-Ibrahim assured Nigerians that the government will continue to protect and empower families across the country.
She announced that the President will soon launch a targeted outreach programme to shape a national framework for family cohesion.
This initiative will involve state governments, the FCT Administration, NGOs, development partners, and religious and traditional leaders. It also aims to improve urban resilience, support families, and rebuild community ties affected by rising social and economic pressures.
The President will also introduce national guidelines for alternative care to protect children outside their biological families. These guidelines will ensure children grow in environments filled with love, dignity, and safety, even without their natural families.
They also align with the National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children and reaffirm the government’s child welfare commitment.
